The national flags all over Moldova will be flown at half-mast on July 6 in memory of the victims of the Stalinist deportations. A decree to this effect was signed by President Nicolae Timofti on July 1, IPN reports.

According to the presidential press service, at 10am on July 10, those who went through the ordeal of deportations will be remembered by observing a moment’s silence. Flowers will be laid at the monuments erected in memory of the victims of Stalinism.

The pubic authorities, enterprises and organizations are recommended not to stage recreational activities on the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Stalinism, while the editorial staffs of newspapers and radio and TV channels are urged to take into account the specific features of the day of July 6 when editing publications and producing programs for this day.

The move is aimed at remembering the tragic pages in Moldova’s history related to the repression and extermination of people during deportations and at educating the young generation in the spirit of liberty, democracy and respect for the human personality.

The Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Stalinism was instituted by a Parliament decision of May 22, 2008.
