The Washington-based Moldova Foundation in cooperation with organizations of Moldovan Community in North America and Europe plan to launch a campaign to collect votes called “Five SMSes for a Democratic Moldova!”, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the Foundation. The organizers, who say that the campaign is apolitical, call on the countrymen from abroad to convince at least five persons to participate in the July 29 elections by sending SMSs or by other communication ways, no matter where they are – abroad or in Moldova. They suggest the following text for the SMS or email: “Don’t Be Indifferent, Vote on July 29! The Fate of Our Children in is Our Hands! Vote for a Democratic Moldova! Send this Message to Five Friends.” “It is not only a right, but a duty to take part in the July 29 elections. We want to mobilize the hundreds of thousands of countrymen to the vote even if the Moldovan authorities placed obstacles – elections on a workday for us, those from abroad, and the refusal to open polling places outside diplomatic and consular missions, especially in the countries where Moldova does not have embassies (Canada, Ireland, Spain),” said Vlad Spanu, president of the Moldova Foundation in Washington. Ala Mandacanu, president of the Association “Moldovan Community in Quebec”, said that the Moldovan Community in Canada has not taken part in the elections in Moldova for many years as there is no embassy or consulate. “Visas are needed to leave for Washington or New York. Furthermore, the traveling expenses are great. However, our community will send a group of voters to the U.S. to cast their votes on July 29,” she said. “We will contact our brothers, sisters, grandparents, neighbors and friends that are at home and ask them not to remain indifferent. Only by participating in elections, will we be able to improve things in Moldova,” said Tatiana Nogailic, president of the Assomoldave Association in Italy. The representative of the Community of Bessarabians in Ireland Ion Stamati called upon all those that care about Moldova’s future to get involved in this campaign and try to persuade five friends and relatives that are at home to go to the polls. “Let’s say a definite YES to democracy, freedom and truth in Moldova,” Ion Stamati urged.
