Expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul” Ion Tabarta said the denouement of the new local mayoral elections in Chisinau and the importance of this should be regarded through the angle of this autumn’s parliamentary elections, IPN reports.
In an interview for Radio Free Europe’s Moldovan Service, the expert said the first round of the mayoral elections was perceived as a signal of the recovery of the pro-European right in Moldova. After a period of pessimism on the pro-European segment, hope that the political pro-European right united started ultimately to appear.
According to Tabarta, this consolidation will enable the pro-European right to present itself honorably or even very well in this autumn’s elections. “The result in the runoffs could ensure particular changes in the municipality of Chisinau, but these changes cannot come only if there is an intention of change. We must admit that the term in office of the future mayor general, no matter who this is, is of a year and this term will have to be confirmed next year, in the local general elections,” he stated.
Ion Tabarta said the geopolitical preference is at the forefront in these elections too. “The exercise is simple - either the first or the second. Those who are oriented more to the left will surely vote for the candidate of the left and those who are oriented more to the right will support the candidate of the right. However, we should take into account two factors – that there are persons who are not so focused on the geopolitical aspects and a lot will depend on the choice of these citizens, and the voter turnout,” he stated.
The expert concluded that the parliamentary elections of this autumn are the most important ones and many citizens regard the mayoral elections in Chisinau as a start that can bring about changes all over the country.
