The first open-type sector for women detainees was inaugurated at penitentiary No. 7 in Rusca. Attending the event, Minister of Justice Vladimir Cebotari said this is a step forward because the detention conditions there are different and the socialization process is facilitated, IPN reports, quoting the Ministry of Justice’s press service.
“We have three women detainees who will be placed in this sector to serve their time. The files of another nine female prisoners are being examined. The conditions here are different. There are no bars on the windows. The persons can also leave the prison,” said the minister.
The open-type sector is intended for women detainees who pose no threat to society and who will not avoid serving time in jail. “These women can go out of the penitentiary and can become involved in different activities on the prison’s territory and outside it. This enables them to easier integrate into society and to earn other incomes,” stated Vladimir Cebotari.
A number of 349 women are held at penitentiary No. 7 in Rusca. In the immediate future, a part of them will be separated. The open-type sector is designed for women convicted of minor offenses. A commission will assess those who are to be transferred to the re-socialization sector, as the law on the social adjustment of persons freed from detention places provides.
