A team of doctors of the National Clinical Hospital “Timofei Moșneaga” saved the life of a 60-year-old patient with a giant abdominal aortic aneurysm by a hybrid, endovascular and surgical operation that was performed in Moldova for the first time, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Ministry of Health said that to prevent the rupture of the aorta, the main vessel through which oxygen-rich blood travels from the heart to the rest of the body, the doctors applied the EVAR method. The minimally invasive endovascular procedure consists in the insertion of a tubular prosthesis and its implanting in the weakened part of the aorta.

Given that the circulation of blood was blocked, from the abdominal aorta to the legs, the doctors used a “femorofemoral” bypass. With the assistance of a graft, they created an alternative way for delivering blood to areas where the native artery was clogged.

The cost of the surgery was covered with money from the mandatory health insurant funds. The patient was already discharged from the hospital.
