The first European-gauge railroad segment has been put into operation in Moldova. It will ensure connection between the railroad of the Giurgiulesti International Port and the European community, at the border with Romania, IPN reports.
The Giurgiulesti-Cahul railroad was reopened after being reconstructed. Last June, this segment was closed for traffic as it was damaged in parts.
By the end of September, the Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure will launch two passenger train routes - Basarabeasca-Cahul and Giurgiulesti-Cahul. A passenger route on the Giurgiulesti-Galati European-gauge railroad will be opened by this yearend.
The passenger route Cahul-Giurgiulesti-Galati will become available from next year, but the train will run along wide railroad. The authorities also aim to develop the transportation of freight along these routes.
Moldova earlier had European-gauge railroad segments, but the last one was disassembled in 1996.
