The first Twinning project on cultural heritage, to the value of €1 million provided by the European Union, was launched in Chisinau on November 17. Within the project, experts from Italy will provide assistance to specialized institutions of Moldova in consolidating the implementation of the legal framework and improving governance in the field of cultural heritage protection, IPN reports.

Minister of Education, Culture and Research Monica Babuc said a project centering on cultural heritage is a novelty for Moldova. Beyond the intrinsic value of culture and heritage for the life of each people, in Moldova, as everywhere in the world, the cultural heritage can serve as a source for sustainable economic development. The project will help strengthen the capacity of specialists and the institutional, legislation knowing and heritage protection capacities.

EU Ambassador to Moldova Peter Michalko said cultural diversity, arts and cultural heritage are essential elements for developing an open mind. He expressed his confidence that the process of restoring remarkable historical monuments will start in 2019.

Valeria Biagiotti, Ambassador of Italy, which is a partner in the implementation of the project, said that when somebody hears about cultural heritage, they immediately associate this thing with Italy because this is the country with the largest number of sites (53) included in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites. In Italy, 17% of the GDP goes to protect the cultural heritage.

In Moldova, there are 3,000 historical monuments, about 100 public monuments, 600,000 movable cultural heritage units and 500 immovable heritage units.
