The members of the first democratic municipal council founded an association that will support the mayors of Chisinau. The association “Municipal Council 90” now includes 62 of the 183 councilors elected in 1990-1995, the organization's chairman Gheorghe Suruceanu announced in a news conference, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to Suruceanu, the idea of founding an association appeared during the activities held to commemorate 15 years of the death of Mayor Nicolae Costin. “Nicolae Costin did many things as he was supported by the municipal council. Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca is not backed by the present council, where there are many group interests. We were more romantic as we did not think about obtaining plots of land or other advantages,” Suruceanu said.
Igor Tarlapan, a member of the association's Standing Bureau, said the members of the organization must help the current councilors fight the Communist 'octopus' and must support the democratic forces so that Chisinau remains a bastion of democracy.
Other members of the Standing Bureau, Ion Luca and Vasile Nedelea, said the first democratic municipal council transformed Chisinau from a Russified city into a national capital. It renamed the streets, districts, and parks, opened the first national kindergartens and schools, brought the monument to Stephan the Great back to his historical place, placed 14 busts on the Classical Writers Alley, founded the municipal theaters Satiricus, Ginta Latina and Guguta, removed the monument to Lenin from the center of the city, included the villages situated nearby in the municipality.
Festivities will be held at Ginta Latina Center on May 1 to mark 20 years of the constitution of the first municipal council after the Soviet period.
