The 1897 fires that broke out in Moldova in 2014 killed 124 people. IPN looks back at the worst of these fires, as well as other emergencies that caused heavy material damage or result in loss of human lives.

January 25: A 8 year old girl and her 14 year old brother died after a gas cylinder exploded. The children were home alone and connected the gas cylinder to the stove by themselves. The explosion was triggered when the kids turned on the lamp.

– March 26: 13,000 chicken died at a poultry farm in Sadova, Calarasi, after a fire burned a 700 square meters room.

– April 8: A 70 year old man and a 40 year old woman die at home in a fire in Cojusna village, Straseni district.

– May 1: A devastating fire almost fully destroyed the mansard of an apartment block in Chisinau's Botanica. The incident was caused by a short circuit and burned 28 apartments.

– May 20: Six persons died and 28 were hospitalized after a Moscow-Chisinau passenger train hit a freight train 60 km from Moscow.

– July 14: Three men, including the driver, burned to death as a vehicle crashed into a tree near Paruceni village, Nisporeni district. Another one died after being thrown out of the window by the impact and two others were hospitalized with severe injuries.

– September 18: The industrial cableway Rezina-Ribnita was demolished through a controlled explosion. Because of the deteriorated state of the construction it fell to the ground partially damaging two stone walls and several electricity and communication cables. An old ZIL vehicle was in the area as well.

– October 18: An explosion happened in an apartment block in Orhei, destroying 4 apartments, killing a man and injuring 3 others.

– November 26: Two fire fighters, aged 21 and 24, died and two others, aged 24 and 35, were injured while trying to put out a fire in a two-storied market in Telenesti. The fire damaged 200 square meters of the building.

– December 10: A family in Nicoreni village, Drochia district, was left homeless after a fire burned their house to ashes. The fire caused by a short circuit. The only person in the house at that moment was the 8 year old daughter, who were hospitalized.
