Overcrowding and candles in churches on Easter Eve make them fire-dangerous. The Emergency Situations Department warns about this danger and recommends the church-goers and all the persons in churches to be very cautious.
According to the investigations of the ESD, many churches do not have the second exit door and in case a fire occurs, fast evacuation might be difficult. The situation can be worsened by the fact that some buildings are located in isolated places, at a considerable distance from the fireman stations, and have no fire alarms.
The specialists say that in order to avoid fires, the responsible persons in churches should warn the parishioners that they should be careful with the candles, and should not allow overcrowding, to remove carpets and chairs from churches. At the same time it is necessary to make special places for candles and to unblock the access ways for fire vehicles in case a fire. Before the mass it is necessary to ensure that it is possible to put out the fire by own means.
According to the statistics provided by the firemen, 12 fires occurred in churches in the last 5 years.
