Firefighter killed in Soroca blast rescue efforts

A firefighter, identified as Igor Gheletchii, was killed while trying to save the people that had been trapped under the debris of an apartment block after Saturday’s gas explosion in Soroca. Another rescuer, Vladimir Ghinaitis, was severely wounded and taken to hospital. The Firefighters and Rescuers Department said the fireman was killed by a loose mass of masonry that fell on top of him during the rescue operation. The rescue operation is continuing. Specialists are now at the scene to carry out an investigation into the circumstances of the blast. The exact cause of the explosion is yet to be determined. Saturday’s explosion in a tenement on 117 Stefan cel Mare Street in Soroca town killed four civilians and wounded five others.
