The administration of the Zoology Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova said the April 20 fire caused enormous damage. The roof burned almost fully and will have to be replaced. The costs were estimated at over 4 million lei. The damage is yet greater as the halls with equipment situated on the fourth floor were flooded.

The Institute’s director Ion Toderas has told IPN that the roof was changed in 2006 and nothing of it can be now restored. The water used to extinguish the fire inundated the fourth floor and affected the equipment in halls there. The basement was also flooded after the water gathered there. The access to the institution was allowed in the morning of April 21, but there is no electric power in the building and the activity of the institution was paralyzed.

The fire affected over 1,000 square meters of the roof of the Zoology Institute. The blaze was put out in the evening of April 20, after over three hours of the localization. Contacted by IPN, Liliana Puscasu, press officer of the General Inspectorate for Emergencies, said there is no danger that the roof will collapse. The cause of fire is yet to be found out.

The area was opened to traffic immediately after the fire was extinguished.

The cause of the fire that damaged the shopping center located at the intersection of Ismail St and Dimitrie Cantemir Blvd in Chisinau is also not yet known. Over 500 square meters of wall and roof insulation was destroyed there. The Chisinau Police Division said a criminal case was started over intentional damaging of property.
