The fire at the grain storage facility of the Giurgiulești International Free Port was localized, but hasn’t been yet fully extinguished. After almost ten hours of the start of the operation, the firefighters continue struggling to contain the blaze. According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, there is no danger the fire will extinguish, IPN reports.

The fire started after a sunflower groats storage tower with over 1,000 tonnes of sunflower groats collapsed on Monday morning. Firefighters managed to localize the fire in about five hours of its start.

The first fire at the Port occurred on September 15 last year. Then, two metal silos with sunflower groats with the volume of 1,200 m3 each collapsed. As a result, the technological process of keeping the groats in another four silos situated nearby was disturbed. The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations said it repeatedly notified the inspection authorities of this situation. In an extended meeting with decisions makers earlier this month, it was agreed that the Agency for Technical Supervision will assess the risk of fire at the facility.
