The chairman of the Liberal Party (PL) Mihai Ghimpu, by his attacks on the people who gathered to take part in the demonstration staged by the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” (“DA”), reduced Dorin Chirtoaca’s chances to win a new term as mayor of Chisinau to zero, said the head of the public association “Moldova Mea” Fiodor Ghelici.

In a news conference at IPN, Fiodor Ghelici said he was present in the Great National Assembly Square on June 7 and saw himself how angry the people were because of Mihai Ghimpu’s actions.

According to the activist, the PL made a mistake by holding an electoral meeting on the day and at the place of the platform’s protest. “Going to the square together with colleagues of mine, who speak mainly Russian and whom I convinced to attend the platform’s demonstration with difficulty, I saw first of all Liberals’ flags. Many of my colleagues were bewildered. They thought it was a race as they came to take part in an apolitical protest,” stated Fiodor Ghelici.

The activist also said that he thought up to the last moment that Mihai Ghimpu will show respect for the people who came together to take part in the protest mounted by “DA” and will free the square for this demonstration. But he didn’t leave and insulted the protesters, naming them a flock of sheep.

According to Ghelici, owing to the actions of the Liberal leader, one of the favorite candidates for the mayoralty of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca was practically removed from the race. The activist is convinced that the mayor of Chisinau will be elected by the first round of voting and this won’t be Dorin Chirtoaca. Ghelici called on the members of the Liberal Party to ask themselves what namely happened in the central square of Chisinau on June 7 and why Mihai Ghimpu became the biggest instigator in Moldova.

On June 7, members and sympathizers of the Liberal Party came together to the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau for an electoral event. Simultaneously, the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” staged a protest against the corrupt government. The two camps clashed.
