The sentencing to jail of former Minister of the Interior Gheorghe Papuc is a show and a political order, with the ex-minister being just a scapegoat, considers activist Fiodor Ghelici, who heads the public association “Moldova Mea” and who was a member of the commission of inquiry into the April 7, 2009 events.
In a news conference at IPN, Fiodor Ghelici said the people will never find out the truth about the April 7, 2009 events because there are many hidden interests. Papuc should be awarded for avoiding bloodshed. His conviction is a show, including for Moldova’s development partners. By such acts, those who are in power want to show that high-ranking officials are also jailed in Moldova.
“A judge kills a man while hunting illegally and is put on probation for two years, while a former minister who prevented bloodshed is sentenced to four years in jail. I see no logic. They think we are idiots,” stated the activist.
Ghelici called upon the judges to obey the law when they take decisions, noting that none of them is safe and they cannot be sure that they will not become scapegoats in any other case.
Fiodor Ghelici also said that if Papuc was convicted, Artur Reshetnikov, who managed then the Security and Information Service, and Vladimir Voronin, who was then head of state and gave orders, should also be jailed. The April 7 events were organized with the participation of other politicians too, such as Vlad Filat and Mihai Ghimpu.
The chairman of “Moldova Mea” noted the charging and conviction of Gheorghe Papuc discouraged the police officers, who are now afraid to act for fear not to have problems with a politician.
Gheorghe Papuc was put on the wanted list as he cannot be found and imprisoned based on the sentence passed by the Appeals Court.
