75% of the surveillance cameras set up at intersections in Chisinau are functional. Officials responsible for the implementation of the project assure all the cameras installed at 42 intersections in the capital city will start to work in normal regime until April 30.

Dan Chirita, head of the Chisinau Traffic Monitoring and Control Center, has told IPN that fines of 2.6 million lei have been imposed on drivers for violations spotted by cameras since the start of the project. Half of them were paid.

According to Dan Chirita, they will soon start to determine vehicles’ speed from one camera to another so that the drivers who break the traffic rules and adjust the speed only near surveillance cameras will be identified. There will be used mobile radars, set up in camouflaged units of transport parked near the roadway.

The processing of the information from surveillance cameras in real time started on February 1. When violations are identified, the vehicle owners receive notices about the imposed fines at home during about 14 days. If the vehicle was driven by another person, the owner must submit a statement to the police, informing who that person was.

Until 2015, surveillance cameras will be installed in 250 intersections all over the country within a project that is financially supported by the People’s Republic of China, which provided US$4.5 million. The Government of Moldova allocated another 6.5 million lei for assembly, construction and telecommunication works.
