Fines imposed on corrupt voters came to 5 million lei

The fines imposed so far on voters who took money in exchange for voting in the presidential election and the referendum amount to 5 million lei. The penalties were imposed by the National Anticorruption Center based on contravention reports drawn up by the police, IPN reports.

According to the legislation, "passive electoral corruption consists in establishing the facts of asking for, accepting or receiving by a voter, personally or through an intermediary, undeserved goods, services, privileges or advantages in any form, for themselves or for another person, for the purpose of exercising or not exercising the right to vote in elections".

This contravention carries a fine that varies between 25,000 and 37,500 lei. The persons who committed the contravention are released from n liability if they denounce it or contribute to the discovery or counteracting of act of electoral corruption.

The NAC noted that it is still examining the received reports and will take decisions on them.
