The State Ecological Inspectorate made an order to carry out inspections in communities, in concert with the local authorities, to prevent and counteract the burning of leaves and vegetal waste. The fine for burning vegetation is 600 to 1,200 lei for private individuals and 6,000 to 9,000 lei for legal entities, IPN reports.

Head of the General Inspections Division of the State Ecological Inspectorate Nelian Capatana has told IPN that the order refers also to persons who burn leaves in their own courtyards as, besides polluting the air, the smoke causes breathing inconveniences and acute respiratory and cardiac diseases.

“The bad habit of burning leaves is seasonal in character and this should be combated and prevented. Previous experiences show the people in towns set leaves on fire after working hours. It is sometimes harder to gain access to these persons. They argue that it is their lot and they do whatever they want on it,” explained Nelian Capatana.

He noted that fines totaling about 600,000 lei were imposed last year for incorrect management of waste. One third of the fines were imposed for burning vegetal waste.
