Fines and confiscations to the value of over 74 million lei were imposed last year in cases managed by the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, up 600% compared to the previous year. Also, sentences in 2024 were issued to 251 people and over 20% of these got jail terms, IPN reports.
"The acquittal rate in the cases of the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office decreased compared to the previous year, which shows that the cases sent to court were of a higher quality of. More than 100 of the sentences passed in 2024 were in recent criminal cases, sent to court by the APO in 2022 (37), 2023 (51) and 2024 (19)," reads a press release.
Last year, the solutions for terminating criminal cases increased, largely due to the expiry of the statute of limitations (94 people in 2024, compared to 39 people in 2023). In such cases, the person is found guilty of committing the crime, but released from the execution of the sentence because the term set by law for criminal liability expired. However, this fact is a ground for the non-rehabilitation of the person and this is not absolved from civil liability and confiscation.
