The lawyers for ex-Premier Vlad Filat requested the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office to immediately stop promoting televised justice. In a press statement, these say the right to defense of Vlad Filat was seriously violated through the news conference held by representatives of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office and the National Anticorruption Center on October 19, IPN reports.
The lawyers note that by disseminating through the media evidence and information about the taken prosecution measures, the working group responsible for this case seriously defied the practice of the European Court of Human Rights, violating thus the presumption of innocence and the fundamental guarantees enjoyed by a defendant.
“Seeing the prosecutor’s reactions within the investigation, we are skeptical about this person’s impartially and about the way in which the proofs are administered in this case. We should not forget that the presumption of innocence and the legality of administering evidence represent sovereign principles on which any lawsuit should be based in a state with authentic rule of law,” says the press statement. According to the lawyers, even in conditions of enormous pressure on the part of the authorities, they will make the necessary efforts to effectively exercise the right to defense and to discover the objective truth in this case.
Anticorruption prosecutors made public details about the case of the former Prime Minister Vlad Filat, who is accused of passive corruption and influence peddling. When searching the Lib-Dem’s home, the police found secret documents belonging to a number of state institutions and papers showing that a number of persons, including politicians, had been followed. Among the proofs are the documents found at the former Premier’s home, which prove statements made by businessman Ilan Shor and confirm the connection with a number of companies involved in the bank frauds. Some of these documents contain the phrase ‘key persons’ and names that have connection with the investigated frauds.
