“For me this approach in its form was regrettable. It would have been fair if we had this discussion, to be at least informed about it”, said Vlad Filat, commenting on a decree signed by Transnistria's leader Yevgeny Shevchuk which introduced special customs duties on goods from the western side of the Nistru and which was published shortly after the two met in Chisinau. Vlad Filat told reporters on Saturday that the decree was signed before the meeting. “It apparently aims to equalize the taxes on goods from the Transnistrian region on the Moldovan market” said Filat, adding the document had to be analyzed thoroughly before further comments could be made on its content. He went on to add that the authorities would continue to work and put forward arguments in order to remove such dualities. The Moldovan Bureau of Reintegration said in a press release on Friday that at the latest meeting between Prime Minister Vlad Filat and Transnistria region's leader Yevgeny Shevchuk on September 26 the issue of customs duties wasn't brought up. The Bureau called the measure “counterproductive” and in disagreement with the understandings reached at the latest meetings, considering that it will have a negative impact on the economic situation of the people and businesses on both sides of the Nistru River.
