Sixty students have been admitted to the Romanian Language and Literature Specialty of the Faculty of Languages of the State University of Moldova this year. This is by one fourth less than last year. The faculty’s pro-dean, senior lecturer Elena Junghietu has told IPN that there are different reasons why the students do not choose this specialty, including the low salary of the Romanian language and literature teachers.
The low number of students at this specialty is also due to the leaving of young people abroad to study or work, in search of a better life.
The pro-dean said that one of the most important stimuli offered by the university is the budget-funded places at this specialty. The 60 students admitted this year will study on a budget-funded place. The studying conditions are good, but the teachers need computers, projectors, a richer library, and other things.
According to a communiqué from the Ministry of Education issued earlier, 1,052 teachers were needed in the preuniversity education institutions of Moldova for the 2013-2014 academic year. There were 34 vacancies for Romanian language and literature teachers.
