Over 4,400 persons last year had operations for cataract performed in medical institutions that signed contracts with the National Health Insurance Company. The number of operations was by 148 lower than the planned number owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, IPN reports.
Over 47.4 million lei was allocated from the mandatory health insurance funds for the purpose. The average cost of a treated case exceeds 10,000 lei. The sum includes the costs for expensive consumables.
The operations for cataract were performed in 16 medical institutions, 11 of which are public, while five are private.
A sum of 61.4 million lei was earmarked for performing operations for cataract this year. Al the medically insured persons with indications who are on the waiting list benefit from such operations.
A cataract is a dense, cloudy area that forms in the lens of the eye. The operation for cataract does not usually necessitate hospitalization. The patient can swiftly recover good vision.
