With the installation of smart traffic lights in the intersection of Dacia Boulevard and Băcioii Noi Street in March last year, there has been no road accident, compared to the previous year, when three of the documented accidents had fatal consequences. The General Directorate of Urban Mobility stated in a press release that the primary goal of smart traffic lights to avoid accidents with serious consequences was achieved by discouraging dangerous maneuvers.
The system continuously scans vehicle flows and transmits the information to the traffic light, which consecutively displays the green signal to vehicles on priority axes, secondary axes, as well as pedestrians, all in just a few seconds. But the most important thing is the flexibility it offers and the potential to better streamline traffic.
For example, in the case of a larger flow of vehicles waiting on the main thoroughfare (Dacia Blvd.), the system can extend the duration of the green signal, to accommodate the increased capacity to pass through the intersection. At the same time, in case of an increase in vehicle queues on the secondary axes (Str. Băcioii Noi), it can green-light the waiting cars more quickly.
The system analyzes all variables and adapts the green light times to ensure a continuous flow of vehicles and to prevent possible congestions on priority traffic directions, depending on the time of day. By means of video cameras, which serve as sensors, it is possible to monitor the road situation both in real time and in the form of a video recording, to elucidate the circumstances of potential road incidents.
