The lawmakers adopted in the first reading a bill that allows providing paternity leave to fathers so that they take an effective part in looking after the newborn, IPN reports.

The newborn’s father will be allowed to be away from work for a period of 14 days, based on an application, during the first 56 days of the child’s birth.

During the leave, the salary earner will receive a paternity leave payment from the employer that cannot be lower than an official monthly salary for this period. The employers will be obliged to encourage the salary earners to benefit from this leave. The cases when the employers will create negative consequences for employers going on paternity leave will be considered discrimination and will be penalized.

The bill contains amendments to a number of legal acts, which are aimed at fulfilling the international commitments assumed by Moldova, concerning the promotion of gender equality in the economic, political and social life.

Under the new provisions, when forming the Government and agreeing the nominal composition of the Parliament’s Standing Bureau, there will be observed a minimum representation quota of 40% for both sexes.

The periodicals and news agencies will be obliged to use a correct and non-discriminatory language in which the status and roles of the women and men are reflected equally and women and men are treated as having the same value and dignity, contributing to diminishing sexist stereotypes.

Sexist advertisements will be banned as they present the woman and man in humiliating and degrading states.
