The farmers who brought their tractors to Chisinau’s main square two weeks ago have announced they are suspending their rally, considering other protest measures instead, such as blocking roads, or even the Giurgiulești Port.

Alexandru Slusari, executive director of the Farmers’ Force Association, declared that the authorities “treat farmers with arrogance and disrespect”. He said that only 54 agricultural businesses are considered by the government for bailout, while most compensation requests remain unmet. “Shame on this government for not even being willing to talk to the farmers. I think this attitude will have serious consequences in the near future”, said the association leader.

It was decided that there is no point in the farmers arguing with the police, added Slusari. Therefore, the farmers will return to their communities to consult for two weeks about other forms of protest. “We will consult the farmers at the grasroots to decide on actions such as blocking all the roads throughout the country, the Giurgiulesti Port or others. In parallel, we will work with the commission set up by the Ministry of Agriculture, we will insist on VAT refunds and subsidies for farmers. If nothing changes, there will be measures that will involve farmers across the country”, declared Alexandru Slusari.
