The National Farmers Federation of Moldova expresses its support for the steps taken to integrate Moldova into the EU, describing them as a historical chance to align the national agriculture with the European one, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué from the Federation.

The farmers are aware of the fact that the agreements with the EU will bring new tasks. There will be imposed new quality standards and will be tested the resistance capacities within a competition with clear and tough rules. “The European integration means not only access to funds, but also effort, investments and a lot of work,” it is said in the communiqué.

The EU is the main producer and exporter of mainly processed agricultural products with high value added. The consumers in the EU ask for a wide range of food products of a high quality. The Moldovan farmers can produce such products, encouraged by good policies in this area.

In the context of the Vilnius Summit and the decisions that are to be taken this month, the National Farmers Federation of Moldova considers that this step will facilitate the dialogue between the farmers and the authorities. “The coming closer to the EU will help us to influence the Government’s decisions and the policies that the authorities pursue,” reads the communiqué.

Agriculture remains the main sector of Moldova’s economy, with a share of about 12% of the GDP. It ensures over 40% of the exports of agrifood products and over 30% of the workplaces. The Federation calls on the farmers from all over the country to support the European integration efforts.
