Alexandru Oleinic, head of the People's Party, says that the government, which assumed the task to sign the EU Association Agreement, should have simultaneously initiated preparations for its implementation, but this was delayed. Consequently, the problems that farmers face today arose, reads a press release of the party.
“Ours did everything as usual – first they signed, then they started to look for solutions to cope with the new rules. Only at the end of its mandate does the current government declare agriculture a national priority and approves the long-awaited Strategy for the development of agriculture. Only at the end of the mandate and certainly with the elections in mind does the Prime Minister involve in the solving of farmers' problems – compensations for losses, restructuring bank loans, opportunities for export – solutions that had to be found before the signing of the Association Agreement”, said Oleinic.
The politician thinks that the farmers' problem points to a new failure of the government. The People's Party has often stressed the need to transform agriculture in the main engine of national economy. He says that to reach this goal, the government must start the subsidization of agriculture, the way its done in European countries, where for those who grow grains, fruit and vegetables, the subsidies are set at 60% of the buying costs.
Alexandru Oleinic adds that the development of efficient agriculture requires the subsidization of the costs of installing irrigation systems and of 70% of the value of investments in creating small businesses for processing vegetables, fruits, grapes, grains, meat, milk.
