The wheat sowed in autumn is in a very good state owing to the precipitation that fell at the beginning of winter. Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov told Info-Prim Neo that the wheat harvest this year is expected to be much higher than the previous year. “We anticipate a better year. It’s impossible for the last year’s disaster to repeat. The farmers were seriously affected and we saw how dependent other areas of the economy are on agriculture. Now that heavy snow has fallen and more precipitation is expected, we will have a good start in spring. Even if the grain crop is average, we can already say that we will have the necessary quantities of wheat,” said the minister. Over 325,000 hectares had been sowed with wheat last autumn. According to Vasile Bumacov, the vegetable harvest and the fruit harvest will be also good. Speaking about the walnut trees that froze last year, the minister said that those who bought saplings from abroad made a mistake. “The climate in our country is different. Before making such investments, the farmers must consider many aspects. Some of them lost millions of lei after purchasing inappropriate saplings,” he stated. The minister also said that the Moldovan farmers should design projects for accessing European funds as it will be a shame for the country if it is unable to make use of the available funds.
