Farmers from northern Moldova plan to protest in front of the Government Building on February 10. They are dissatisfied with the fact that the authorities promised compensations for the harvest lost as a result of last April’s frost, but distributed no money so far.

Vasile Pascal from Donduseni district said a commission of the Ministry of Agriculture, together with the deputy minister, visited him and saw that he has 46 hectares of orchards that produced no apple. He was promised compensations until last autumn, but he received no money.

Another farmer from the same district Stanislav Ivanita said the Government was to approve the regulations concerning the allocation of compensations, but hasn’t done it.  He has an orchard that is 8 hectares in area and has to pay interest on the loan and cannot cope.

“I have waited for a year and a half to be offered subsidies for loans,” stated Alexandru Chersac, a farmer from Ocnita, who does not hope to be helped. The trees in his orchard were 97% affected by the April 2016 frost. “A commission from Chisinau came and drew up some documents and that’s all,” stated Alexandru Chersac, adding that he purchased pesticides for treating the trees even if he didn’t get a harvest.

The farmer also said that the Prime Minister promised about 45 million lei in compensations from the reserve fund. The regulations were consulted with those interested last September and the farmers hoped to get the money last October.
