Farmers in Ocnita district waive the subsidies arranged by the state for ploughing and sowing in favour of the southern districts of Moldova, who are currently heavily affected by drought. PM Vasile Tarlev visited the farms in Ocnita and informed that the gesture was initiated by the northern farmers. The suggestion is seen as “a Christian and merciful act”. The Department for Emergency Cases will redistribute the money in favour of the farmers from the southern districts of Moldova. The Government announced that it will allocate 84 million lei for subsidising this fall’s agricultural works. The money will be distributed to farmers by an average sum of 200 lei for each sowed hectare, depending on the damages caused by drought. The money will be distributed in two stages. As promised by Vasile Tarlev, the first part of the subsidies will be offered in the first half of August. To date, the total damages to Moldova’s agriculture caused by the drought are estimated at 12 billion lei. Precipitations occurred in mid July in Ocnita contributed to the reinvigoration of the cereal crops in this district.
