A family from Chisinau says it will sue the Moldovan government in the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR), after the Supreme Court of Justice allowed a company to perform construction works in Chisinau's historic center. “We have no choice. We'll sue this sentence in the ECHR. All the institutions find the violations committed by Star Bait Company, but nobody stops the works on this illegal building site, although it is obliged by law,” Serghei Gotonoga, the barrister of the Toporovschi family, stated at a news conference. He says the only institution trying to halt the construction is the Chisinau city hall. “Initially the city hall allowed the company to perform the construction works, issuing the necessary documents. Later on February 9, the city hall ordered to cease the works on the site,” the lawyer said. The city hall's decision was sued by the company, and it won the case in the Supreme Court of Justice. Two years ago, Star Bait Company started to demolish a building on N. Anestidiadi str., to gain additional area for a new building. The Toporovschis live in the partially demolished block and accuse the company of damaging their dwelling.
