The initiative of Prosecutor General Corneliu Gurin to extend the investigation into the case of stealing of billions of lei from the banking system is absolutely necessary for reaching finality, said experts invited to the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Media analyst Cristian Tabara thinks the prosecutor general possesses information and needs evidence to be able to confirm it. “Corneliu Gurin probably knows something and needs to substantiate what he knows. The investigation should be carried out from down to up so as to gradually reach the big ‘sharks’. Regretfully, unlike Romania, in Moldova such an investigation is conducted for the first time,” he stated.

Head of the International Relations Department of the Moldova Free International University (ULIM) Mihai Cernencu considers the investigation could lead to the arrest and punishment of those who staged the stealing of billions of lei from the three banks. “Similar cases happened earlier too, even if they involved smaller sums. Let’s remember the bank “Ghineia”, whose owner fled to Moscow with the money. All the cases that remained unsolved led to the recent large-scale theft as these encouraged the thieves. Such a situation can no longer be tolerated. The problem has political undertones as those who stole the billions pursued the goal of controlling the banking system. The vulnerability of the banking system means the vulnerability of the state,” he said.

Dean of the Faculty of Law of ULIM Alexandru Cauia believes the extension of the investigation can lead to the arrest of decision makers from the political system. “I think a theft of such a scale couldn’t have taken place without the involvement of high-ranking officials,” he stated.
