Over ten types of honey and several dozen bee products are exhibited at the Beekeepers Fair, which takes place between August 19-22 in the Metropolitan Cathedral Square in Chisinau. This time, beekeepers came to the Fair with a wider range of products, including types of honey less known to the local consumer. The event, which is at its 17th edition, is held annually to mark the National Beekeeper’s Day on August 19.

Ion Maxim, president of the National Beekeepers Association, has told IPN that 2021 has been a good year so far. Beekeepers will amaze their consumers with lesser-known types of honey, such as buckwheat, lavender, sage and coriander flavors, which taste intense and contain a rich complex of vitamins. At the fair, visitors can also find honey with additions of seeds or nuts, as well also other bee products, such as pasture, pollen, propolis, royal jelly, various tinctures and wax figurines.

“Compared to 2020, this year is much better for beekeepers, both in terms of the amount of honey collected and in terms of bee families’ well-being. In 2020, due to the drought, beekeepers were struggling. This year, however, we managed to restore a good part of the lost families and subsequently were able to obtain a richer output,” said Ion Maxim.

Honey prices range from 70 lei to 170 lei for a kilogram. The cheapest type is polyfloral honey and the most expensive is acacia honey. “Acacia honey is in high demand both in Moldova and abroad. It crystallizes the slowest and is lighter in color than other types of honey,” said the president of the Beekeepers Association.

Beekeepers at the fair say that bee products are beneficial for strengthening immunity, especially in light of the Covid pandemic.

The Beekeepers Fair is open every day, during August 19-22, from 8AM to 6PM.
