On the one hand, the mixed-member electoral system was adopted to prevent the Party of Socialists (PSRM) from seizing power. On the other hand, the PSRM and Russia benefit from this system, said experts from yesterday evening’s panel of the talk show “Important” that is produced by TVC21 channel, IPN reports.
Historian and analyst Ruslan Shevchenko said the mixed electoral system was promoted for the Democrats to convince the Europeans that if this system is introduced, the Socialists will be prevented from obtaining 60-70 seats in the next Parliament. “Indeed, the PSRM, based on the proportional representation system, could win more than half of the seats of MP. When half of the MPs are elected not on party lists, but in single-member constituencies, the situation changes radically because not even the Socialists have so many people in districts and villages who could be elected,” he stated, adding that the Socialists haven’t yet understood that they fell into a trap.
Chairman of the Center for Initiatives and Public Authorities Monitoring Ion Dron said this system is convenient tfor Russia and the PSRM. “Russia needs the Republic of Moldova to be in a gray area and not to take steps towards the European Union and be a buffer zone between the West and Russia so that the West does not come closer to Russia’s borders. It is interested in seeing great instability here,” stated Ion Dron.
