The absence of incidents during the activities held to celebrate Victory Day and Europe Day on May 9 points to particular results achieved in ensuring conciliation. Such a conclusion was formulated in the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Doctor Habilitate of Politology Victor Juc said the May 9 festivities took place peacefully and legally, which is very hard to obtain in a society that is profoundly divided according to geopolitical criteria. “Some celebrated Europe Day, while others celebrated Victory Day. Some people didn’t celebrate anything at all. The parties celebrated each in their way, while the veterans from different camps communicated between them,” he stated.

Dean of the Faculty of History of the Teacher Training University “Ion Creanga” Sergiu Musteata said this day that should commemorate those killed in battle is very politicized, with some using it to promote their own interests. “People’ attitudes on this day are different. In Chisinau there are competing memories. They switched to the memory war from them. May 9 should be a memory day when we must remember those killed in war,” he stated.

Ex-presidential adviser Victor Grebenshchikov said he is optimistic, but real conciliation can be achieved if more people become consciously involved. “It’s good that the veterans who fought on opposite fronts communicate between them. This communication should become an example for the authorities, the ruling parties and the opposition and for everyone,” he stated.
