The ultimatum to hold a referendum on the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU, imposed by the Communist Party (PCRM), should not be taken seriously as the Communists lost their credibility. The conclusion was formulated by a group of experts in the program “Politics” on TV7 channel, IPN reports.

According to political analyst Anatol Taranu, the PCRM is in a crisis of ideas. “The request made to the President is like a request made to the Pope of Rome. Under the Constitution, the head of state cannot dissolve the Government as he does not have such powers. How can they ask for a referendum now that the situation in eastern Ukraine is destabilized owing to the plebiscite? Also, the time is now not opportune given that the parliamentary elections will take place in five months,” he stated.

The head of the Party “People’s Force” Nicolae Chirtoaca believes that the Communists’ ultimatum is in fact cheap propaganda. “Without having definite objectives, the Communists do everything possible to keep their voters. From the very beginning, the PCRM didn’t intend to get used to the role of the opposition. It wasn’t and isn’t a constructive opposition,” he said.

According to Chirtoaca, the Communists lost credibility as they promote something that does not exist – the so-called Eurasian Union. The PCRM also discredited itself by propagating values that led to the territorial division in Ukraine.

Former Communist MP Victor Stepaniuc said he is for the referendum. “If we do not hold a national referendum, there will be staged local illegal plebiscites and we already witnessed something like this in Gagauzia,” he stated.

Two days ago, the PCRM demanded that President Nicolae Timofti within two weeks should initiate a referendum where the people would be asked if they want the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU to be signed. The accord is to be signed in Brussels on June 27.
