Experts accuse the Moldovan authorities of not paying enough attention to the problems faced by the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia as this is the reason why the March 22 elections there could be won by a candidate who is openly supported by Moscow. The criticism was leveled in the talk show “Politics” on TV 7 channel, IPN reports.

Mihail Sirkeli, head of the Comrat Center “Piligrim-Demo”, considers that Chisinau will bear the blame if the elections in Gagauzia are won by a pro-Russian candidate. “The Government of Moldova left Gagauzia to cope by itself and now, when it is only one week until the Governor elections, it is too late to do something. If saying it more ironically, the new Bashkan will be the governor of a Russian region. Chisinau lost to the Russian TV channels that formed the mentality of the Gagauz people. Anther characteristic of these elections is that nothing is said about candidates’ programs,” he stated.

Corneliu Ciurea, expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul”, also considers that Chisinau can no longer became involved in the autonomous unit’s policy, but recommends the Moldovan administration to support one candidate. “One candidate supported by Chisinau would have more chances than many other candidates supported by different parties. In general, the Moldovan authorities after 2012 pursued an incorrect policy, which was destructive towards Gagauzia and was based on intrigue. I hope the Gagauz people will not accept a harsh scenario and will not worsen the relations with Chisinau,” he stated.

The program’s permanent invitee, political analyst Igor Botan said the Gagauz region can be used by Moscow to obtain Moldova’s federalization. “I think Igor Dodon prepares the ground for federalizing Moldova. Irina Vlah will be used for the purpose,” he stated.
