Expert of the Institute for European Policies and Reforms Mihai Mogâldea said the poor result achieved in last Sunday’s elections by the “Pro Romania” Party, on whose ticket ex-prime minister Iurie Leancă ran, shows the Moldovan politician does not enjoy big popularity among the voters and cannot secure votes for a Romanian party. Even if someone of the party’s leadership concedes their seat of MEP to him, Iurie Leancă will represent not the Republic of Moldova, but the political family of which he forms part, the expert was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Country” on Vocea Basarabiei TV channel.
“It’s true that 37,000 voters at the European Parliament elections are not the whole electoral pool of our country, but these votes are a message transmitted to Iurie Leancă as the people knew he will run in elections,” stated Mihai Mogâldea. According to him, it’s clear that Iurie Leancă does not have a very good image in the country
The expert noted the vote in Moldova didn’t generate big surprises, but an interesting fact noticed is that such center-left parties as the Social Democratic Party of Romania do not get many votes.
Ion Harghel, vice president of the Youth Organization of the Democratic Party of Moldova, said a new narrative is needed at EU level. The EU should make larger investments in the countries that border Russia and in such countries as the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia. “I mean clearer investments in concrete things, investments in the economy, not in NGOs that are perceived by the ordinary people as mandatorily something beneficial for their economic situation. A pragmatic narrative is needed, not one based on ideologies,” stated Ion Harghel.
The “Pro Romania” Party won slightly over 1,500 votes of the total almost 38,000 cast by Moldovans with Romania passports.
