The Chisinau-based National Library mounted an exhibition of old and rare Christian books dating from the 19th century. They form part of a collection gathered as a result of the closure of churches and church schools during the atheist oppression, IPN reports.

The exhibit contains 500 books. According to a communiqué of the Metropolitan Church of Chisinau and All Moldova, the event was staged on the occasion of the Orthodox Books Days in Chisinau. The Metropolitan Church, in cooperation with the National Library, will issue a number of Orthodox books with the support of private publishing houses of Moldova and Romania.

The Orthodox Books Days in Chisinau are aimed at reminding about the persecution of the Christian books on the territory of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic, when the religious books were removed from schools and then from the public area through the state policy.

The exhibition of old and rare church books was mounted in the hall of the National Library. It will continue until June 13. Entrance is free of charge.
