The former prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases Lilian Bacalîm unjustifiably owns an apartment, a car and cash, said the National Integrity Authority (NIA), which identified a difference of over 835,000 lei between the declared incomes and the owned property. The case was sent to court for ordering the confiscation of the ill-gotten gains, IPN reports.
According to NIA, the integrity inspector determined a difference of over 296,000 lei between the 2016 incomes of the prosecutor’s family and the price paid of an apartment in December 2016. This sum is 2.9 times higher than the ceiling set by law.
Also, a sum of about 538,000 lei outside the declared incomes was identified in 2019, resulting from the price paid for a Toyota RAV4 Hibrid car (over 534,000 lei) and a bank deposit (about 5,000 lei).
The ex-prosecutor also intentionally didn’t indicate in the property and personal interests statements for 2016-2019 data about incomes earned in the form of bank transfers and supplements to a bank account (US$750 and €7,551), two houses owned in the municipality of Chisinau and the Toyota RAV4 car.
The NIA said that even if the ex-prosecutor was repeatedly asked to formulate his viewpoint, this didn’t benefit from his rights and didn’t provide explanations over the property held unjustifiably.
If the Agency’s document remains final, Lilian Bacalîm will be unable to hold a public post during three years and will be put on the Register of Bans.
Contacted by IPN for a comment, spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases Emil Gaitur said the institution he represents will not comment on the NIA’s findings.
