The former director general of the Wine Combine “Cricova” SA and a firm director were arrested by officers of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the ex-director of Cricova, in breach of the law, organized the construction of a visitor service unit called “Underground Town” by a company. On July 31, 2012, this was put on the Real Estate Register with a total area of 1,490.20 square meters.

The area of 0.38 ha on which the center is located formed part of the total area of 83.28 ha of the mine precincts of “Cricova” SA, but the given area was illegally excluded from the mine precincts and leased out to the business entity for 2011-2016.

According to prosecutors, this is against the Law on the declaring of the Wine Combine “Cricova” SA as a facility of the national cultural heritage of Moldova and the Culture Law that bans the sale of the property of this entity.

It was also established that on the instruction of the ex-director general of “Cricova” SA, the Business and Tourism Center SA “Cricova-Vin” on July 9, 2010 lent 2.1 million lei to the same company for erecting the “Underground Town” on July 9, 2010. The loan hasn’t been yet repaid.

Anticorruption prosecutors carried out searches at the homes of the former director. He faces six to ten years in jail and ban on holding particular posts or performing particular activities for 10 to 15 years in jail.
