A former bailiff of the North Territorial Chamber was sentenced to seven years in jail and banned from holding public posts for a period of three years after he was found guilty of abuse of power and embezzlement on 12 counts, IPN reports.
The Prosecutor General’s Office said that in 2014-2017, while serving as a bailiff, he withdrew and appropriated the sums placed by debtors on a special account, which were to be transmitted to creditors. Also, in the same period, implementing an executory document to collect the debt from a debtor in favor of the creditor, the culprit illegally sold eight properties of the debtor even if he knew that these had been sequestrated. It was estimated that he caused damage totaling over 450,000 lei to the injured parties.
In the spring of 2018, he was put on the wanted list. In October 2020, the culprit was arrested in Romania and in a month was extradited to Moldova. Initially, he refused to accept blame, but later admitted his guilt, asking for the examination of his case by a simplified procedure.
The sentence can be appealed to a higher court.
