In a referendum where voters would choose between Moldova’s entry into the European Union and the entry into the Eurasian Union, 37.6% would vote for the first, while 42.5% for the second. According to the sociological poll “Vox Populi – January 2018”, which was presented by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers on January 24, 7.1% of the respondents have no option, 4.3% would not take part in the referendum, while 8.5% didn’t want to answer or didn’t know what to answer, IPN reports.

Compared with the situation of 2017, the number of those who would choose to join the EU rose by 1.5 percentage points. The number of those who are oriented to the EU rose by less than 0.3 percentage points.

In an eventual referendum on Moldova’s entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), 19.4% of those surveyed said they would vote for, while 59.6% would vote against. 7.1% would not take part in the plebiscite, while 5.3% do not know what NATO is. 8.6% didn’t want to answer or didn’t know what to answer. Compared with 2017, the number of supporters of NATO decreased by 2.1 percentage points.

Head of the Association of Sociologists and Demographers Victor Mocanu said the data show there is a direct relationship between the people’s dissatisfaction related to the reforms implemented in Moldova and the direction in which the country develops and the chosen geopolitical course.

The poll covered 1 783 people from 91 communities, except for the Transnistrian region, and was carried out in the first half of January. The margin of sampling error is +/- 2.4%.
