The European town, set up on the occasion of Europe Day in the Great National Assembly Square of Chisinau, brought together visitors of all ages on May 10. These stopped at all the tents of the EU member states to taste traditional dishes and to familiarize themselves with the typical features of every state. The people who came to the central square of Chisinau took part in different contests and the European languages schools and learned about the projects financed by the EU. The event involved also senior state officials, IPN reports.

President Nicolae Timofti said it is of vital importance for Moldova’s future for all the citizens to realize the necessity of modernizing society, based on European values, and not to yield to the populist fictions about the bright past. He congratulated those attending on Europe Day. “Let’s celebrate together on this nice day. Starting with this wonderful European town, we should make effort to transform Chisinau into a European town, while Moldova – into a really European country! Many years on Europe! Many years on Moldova!” he stated.

Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici said the implementation of the European project will bring guarantees for the people’s welfare, peace and safety, and for building a transparent and democratic society. He noted that even if the foreign partners consider that Moldova is the EU’s partner with the biggest prospects, we have yet a lot to do. “Our European integration efforts are made in an atmosphere of social tension, economic problems and an unprecedented level of corruption. I and the Government I head pledge to work hard to regain your confidence and the confidence of our foreign partners,” he said.

Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said the European partners are like a GPS that shows the direction to a better life from which every person can benefit. A tribunal is needed in the European integration process, which would judge those who betrayed the trust of the European partners and the people on the European road. “We ask you not to disconnect this GPS. Keep it on until Moldova becomes an EU member,” he stated.

The officials, together with the EU ambassadors, made a tour of the European town. The holiday continued with a performance by artistic groups of Moldova and the EU member states.

On May 16, the European Town will also be staged in the square of the Soroca Fortress, where 13 embassies of the EU member states and 36 projects financed by the EU will come together. There will be set up the same activity areas and attraction points: gastronomical tents, European languages schools, public debates and dancing masterclasses. The activities are organized by the EU Delegation to Moldova in cooperation with the Government of Moldova and the Chisinau City Hall.
