The delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament will pay today a fact-finding visit to the Transnistrian region. The program of the visit includes meetings with the Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov, chairman of the local Supreme Soviet Anatol Caminski, and Tiraspol's negotiator in the Transnistrian conflict settlement talks Vladimir Yastrebcheak, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“We will discuss aspects of the talks in the 5+2 format, which, though informal, are a step forward because the formal talks have been suspended several years ago. We will also discuss the situation of human rights and visit the school of Bender district,” Monica Macovei, of the group of MPs of the European People's Party, said in a news conference in Chisinau.
The delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament is in Moldova on an official visit during October 11-12. It consists of MEPs Graham Watson (the UK), European Parliament rapporteur for Moldova responsible for monitoring the process of negotiating the EU-Moldova Association Agreement, Monica Luisa Macovei (Romania), Cristian Dan Preda (Romania), Tatjana Zdanoka (Latvia), and Adam Bielan (Poland).
