The European Parliament on Tuesday voted to top up macro-financial aid for Moldova by up to €145 million to help the country cover part of its funding needs in 2023, with the money to be disbursed in the second half of the year, MEP Siegfried Mureșan announced by a press statement issued after the vote, IPN reports.

“The Republic of Moldova urgently needed this new macro-financial assistance to ensure macroeconomic stability and to take new support measures for the people. The support, totaling €45 million in grants and up to €100 million in loans, will be disbursed in two installments planned for the third and fourth quarters of this year. I’m glad that we swiftly approved this financial support. It was essential for the new assistance to be approved without delay for the money to reach the Republic of Moldova in the second half of this year. The decision was adopted by 561 votes to 43, with 20 abstentions, which shows, again, that the European Parliament is united in its intention to help the Republic of Moldova,” stated the MEP.

“Moldova is a candidate for EU membership and needs more support from us to continue on its European path, in parallel with the handling of all the faced challenges, such as the high rate of inflation, high energy prices due to the Russian Federation’s gas blackmail and the management of the security threats generated by the situation in the region. That’s why we must further increase the support for the authorities in Chisinau as only by helping the Republic of Moldova to remain stable and advance the European integration, we can guarantee safety on our borders and inside the European Union,” noted Siegfried Mureșan.
