Romanian MEP Andi Cristea, who heads the European Parliament’s Delegation for Moldova, and chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament Elmar Brok sent an official letter with the European institution’s expectations of the new executive of Moldova to Prime Minister Pavel Filip, IPN reports.
According to a press release issued by Andi Cristea’s team, the letter was sent to underline the necessity of fundamentally reforming the state following the voting in of the Government headed by Pavel Filip on January 20, which is one of the conditions formulated by Romania for providing the first tranche of the €150 million loan. The MEP says this financial assistance, which is attentively monitored by the European Commission and the IMF, generated a series of conditions, such as to consolidate the justice sector and the banking system, to restore the relations with the EU, to improve the legislative conditions for the business community and to facilitate cooperation with civil society.
The two European officials also invited the Prime Minister to take part in an exchange of opinions within the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.
“The Republic of Moldova can count on the Union’s support as long as the new executive proves by deeds the seriousness and necessary level of political ambition for doing the reforms stipulated in the Association Agreement. The new Government is obliged to act to modernize society, to regain the people’s confidence and to reestablish the macro-economic stability,” said Andi Cristea, noting that the signing of an accord with the IMF is essential for the European financing lines intended for Chisinau to be reopened.
The two officials assured that Moldova can count on the EU’s support on the path of reformation, underlining the important role played by the EU – Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee in ensuring and monitoring the relevant reforms.
