Moldova’s integration into the EU is a chance to revitalize the economy and to build a society with meaning and stance, President Nicolae Timofti said in the assembly held in the central square of Chisinau on November 3, IPN reports.

The head of state said he came to the event as an ordinary citizen to support Moldova’s European cause. “Over the last 25 years, we came together in the Great National Assembly Square at the crossroads. Here we stated our wish to be free. Today we came here to reiterate the commitment we made during the first years of the national liberation movement,” said Nicolae Timofti.

He reminded that at the Vilnius EaP Summit in three weeks, Moldova will receive a signal of trust from the EU and will have to work more to align itself with the standards and values of the European community. “We cannot oscillate between two directions. Even if we are not satisfied with certain things, we must believe in our chance. We want Moldova to become a prosperous and democratic country. I’m sure that we are able to achieve this goal. Moldova belongs to Europe,” stated the President.

Director of the Soroca Museum of History and Ethnography Nicolae Bulat said all those who came to the central square of Chisinau to take part in the assembly did it voluntarily as they wanted to support the country’s European course and to ensure a bright future for the children and grandchildren.

Chairman of the Writers Union Arcadie Suceveanu said the European course assumed by Moldova in 2005 was the correct and irreversible path. “The path to the EU is not an easy one. It is a road of sacrifices that implies hard work, effort, responsibility and discipline. The Vilnius Summit is only the first step on this road. We now must decide whether we want to remain hostage of Russia or to break the malefic ties and head for freedom, civilization and welfare,” he stated.

More than 60,000 people took part in the assembly staged by the government coalition in support of the European integration course on November 3.
