Socialist MP Vlad Batrîncea said the parliamentary majority’s attempt to introduce “the European integration” phrase in the Constitution was an orchestrated show. After the failed vote in Parliament, the MP told the reporters that this ideology – the European integration - brought the Moldovans to ruin during nine years.

Vlad Batrîncea noted the European course at the beginning was supported by 70% of the population. Now that the popularity of this option declined, attempts are being made to introduce it by force in the Constitution. “This is anti-democratic and anti-European move. One cannot impose a state ideology and infringe this way the freedom of thought and freedom of expression. This would be a fatal mistake by Parliament. These are hostile games and they have nothing to do with the national interest of the Republic of Moldova,” he said.

As to the idea of holding a referendum on the issue formulated by Speaker Andrian Candu, Vlad Batrîncea said the Socialists always pleaded for plebiscites. He expressed his confidence that the people will vote against the European integration idea in a referendum. “The European integration is history, a failed fable,” he stated.

The vote for the Democratic Party’s initiative to amend the Constitution and enshrine the European integration objective in it failed. The MPs of the Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party, the Party of Socialists and the Party of Communists didn’t support the bill. The initiative garnered only 54 votes in favor and wasn’t thus adopted. A constitutional initiative is carried by the votes of 67 MPs.
